Meaningful Registration

Meaningful registration was a project in 2017-2018 that focused on the question of what makes digital data meaningfully registered in the physical world. Areas of focus include: aesthetic concerns relating to intersection of digital and physical, meaningful augmentations of our relationships and spaces, ramifications of augmented spaces, and embodiment of data.

Experiments in Aesthetics of Meaningful Registration

Much of the research performed thus far for Meaningful Registration takes the form of artistic experiments and their documentation. Below is documentation from several of these experiments. These included experiments play with the quality of the relationship between the physical sign used to augment and the digital object that is registered in the world through augmentation.

Experiment 4

Ink drawing recognized by custom augmented reality app and converted into a 3d undulating surface.

Experiment 3

ARCU marker drawn in charcoal hangs on a wall. Viewing the drawing through a custom app, the marker is replaced by video playback of the documentation of the drawing of the marker.

Exploration 2
Experiment 2

Charcoal drawing of a shadow cast be a non-existent chair is used by augmented reality technology to superimpose a digital chair unto the world.
